Like you, I make a folder for the photos where I want that folder to be, with the name I want. Then I find the files on the card (which is in the card reader), highlight them, then either drag them over or use Ctrl-C to copy them. I would not use the word 'import' for this. They are exact copies of what is on the card.
I find AutoPlay annoying because it usually wants to do the wrong thing and gets in the way, so I have turned it off.
Windows hasn't caught up to CR3 files, so you can't view them (easily) in File Explorer. Adobe photoshop cc 2015 rel. I have heard you can get a utility to view the icons, as JJ also mentioned, but I don't have experience with it. There is some info here.
Once they are on the hard drive, of course you can view and manipulate them in LR. You can also view and edit CR3s with FastStone, which is a very capable little editor. And it is free.
